Japanese comic book "Sailor Moon" arrives in Portugal

The Japanese comic book "Sailor Moon," created in the 1990s by Naoko Takeuchi and which became a popular phenomenon, with animated series, films, shows and video games, begins to be published on the 20th in Portugal.
"Sailor Moon – Navegantes da Lua" will have 12 volumes, with only the first being published this year and the rest at a rate of three books per year, as a source from the publisher Distrito Manga, part of the Penguin Random House group, told Lusa news agency.
According to the same source, this is the first official edition of the Japanese comic book series in European Portuguese, an adaptation and revision of the Brazilian edition, the result of a partnership with the publisher JBC Brasil.
“Navegantes da Lua” is a popular manga (the name for the comic book produced in Japan) that was originally published in a magazine between 1991 and 1997, featuring Tsukino Usagi, a teenager who discovers she has magical powers and is tasked with fighting the forces of evil.
At the time, artist and scriptwriter Naoko Takeuchi (1967) had already published the comics “Maria” and “The Cherry Project” and wanted to draw a story with superheroines, having been challenged by the editor to draw them in sailor uniforms, very popular in Japan.
Associated with the idea of women's empowerment and a pioneer in the representation of queer characters, "Sailor Moon" became one of the biggest popularity phenomena in Japanese comics, resulting in various entertainment content, such as animated series, shown on Portuguese television since the 1990s, films currently streaming, and many fantasy and action narratives starring young warriors.
“Navegantes da Lua” will be part of a catalog by the Portuguese publisher Distrito Manga, in which other Japanese comic book series are already being published or reissued, such as “Attack on Titan”, by Hajime Isayama, “Ghost in the Shell”, by Shirow Masamune, and “Akira”, by Katsuhiro Otomo.
